Tom Holland has had “conversations” about returning as Spider-Man
By Daniel Roman
Ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home swung into theaters and started shattering box office records, it’s created all sorts of conversations. How did it feel for all three Spider-Men to unite and fight baddies together in this multiversal adventure? What about the opinions of those villains returning from Spidey films past? Actors Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe even set a Guinness World Record for the “longest career as a live-action Marvel character.”
In short, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the biggest movie of the moment. And one thing lots of fans are wondering is if this is the end for Tom Holland’s stint as the titular wallcrawler. Holland has portrayed Peter Parker in six MCU films to date, including three solo Spider-Man flicks, but No Way Home marks the end of his contract. This has led to lots of speculation about whether the actor will return, which Holland has stoked by being a little reluctant to say anything definitive.
“Conversations” about Tom Holland returning as Spider-Man have happened
While out on the press tour for his new movie Uncharted, Holland did address the spider-sized elephant in the room. (Which I guess would be a pretty small spider, but you know what I mean.) Entertainment Weekly put the actor on the spot and asked him whether he’d be reprising his role as Peter Parker in future movies.
“We’ve had conversations about the potential future of Spider-Man, but at the moment they are conversations. We don’t know what the future looks like,” Holland said. “I’m still riding the wave of the success of the film and enjoying that.”
Which sounds like a pretty good way to be going about things, really. Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently the sixth highest grossing film of all time and closing in on Avatar’s spot as the third-highest grossing movie at the domestic box office, so good on Holland for being present and enjoying the moment.
Sony wants more of Tom Holland as Spider-Man
In an interview with Fandango back in November, Sony producer Amy Pascal said that, “This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”
So while the ink may not be dry on any contracts and everyone’s still reeling from the success of No Way Home, it sounds like plans are certainly afoot.
Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to crush it at the box office. As of this writing, it’s brought in over $1.74 billion internationally, and it hasn’t even released in China, which is an enormous market. Domestically, it’s sitting at $735 million, which is just shy of Avatar’s $760 million record.
