Of all the Star Wars shows currently in production at Disney+, the one fans are most excited for is undoubtedly Obi-Wan Kenobi. This limited series will see Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen return to the roles of Obi-Wan and Darth Vader for the first time since Revenge of the Sith came out almost two decades ago.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set during the intervening years between the Jedi massacre at the end of Revenge of the Sith and the start of A New Hope. We know very little about the plot or what Obi-Wan gets up to during those years, although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has teased that the series will feature “the rematch of the century” between Vader and Obi-Wan. It’s interesting to think about how that might go down, since both characters have to survive the duel so they can be part of the original trilogy. We shall see what happens when the show is released!

A Disney+ executive may have accidentally revealed Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s release month

Speaking of release dates, that’s something else about the show we don’t know…although the picture is getting clearer. The Direct reports that Disney+ executive Brandon SanGiovanni may have accidentally let the release month for Obi-Wan Kenobi slip on Twitter. The damning tweet has since been deleted, but you can still find it on Reddit.

“Our very own Obi-Wan [will] be saying ‘hello, there,’ on Disney+… May 2022,” SanGiovanni wrote. He has since walked this back, tweeting that he was referring to the Star Wars: Obi-Wan comic run that was just announced. “This is a comic, to be clear,” he wrote. “Mixed two tweets and will now shame myself eternally.”

While the comic announcement does use the same “hello there” wording as SanGiovanni’s original tweet, the fact that he mentioned Obi-Wan coming to the Disney+ streaming service still makes the whole situation suspect.

Regardless of whether we believe the story of mixed up tweets or think SanGiovanni accidentally dropped the release month for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, the evidence continues to mount that we’ll see the show release in May or shortly thereafter. In addition to this comic series, which launches that month, we’ll also be getting a new tie-in novel by author Mike Chen on May 10 called Star Wars: Brotherhood, which is all about Obi-Wan and Anakin’s adventures together during the Clone Wars. That’s an awful lot of tie-in material to have coming out in a very specific window of time.

There’s also the fact that May 4, Star Wars day, falls on a Wednesday this year, which happens to be the day of the week that Disney+ has begun favoring for new episodes of its big original shows. Since Moon Knight’s finale is expected to air on that day, it’s possible Disney+ might not want to launch Obi-Wan Kenobi until later…but we’d bet quite a lot that if it doesn’t premiere on May 4, it’ll be shortly afterward.

The Book of Boba Fett is the current Star Wars show airing on Disney+. The season finale drops this coming Wednesday, February 9. Could we see a more official announcement for Obi-Wan Kenobi then?
