And that’s who stands to win. Now let’s talk about who’s been ignored.
Spider-Man: No Way Home shut out of most Oscar categories
There are notable snubs here. For instance, although Dune crops up a lot on this list, Denis Villeneuve doesn’t get a nod for Best Director, although he is up for Best Screenplay. Other notable absences include Aaron Sorkin not getting a Best Screenplay nod for Being the Ricardos, Frances McDormand going unacknowledged for her work in The Tragedy of MacBeth, and Lady Gaga getting no respect for House of Gucci.
All that said, easily the biggest snub here is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which released to rave reviews and is on its way to becoming one of the most successful movies in history. It got exactly one nomination in the main show, for Best Visual Effects. It didn’t even place in other technically oriented categories like editing, sound, or production design, to say nothing of getting a Best Picture nod.
This probably won’t help the Oscars recover from the perception that they’re out of touch with the tastes of the general movie-going public, but I’m sure Disney and Sony will be comforted by their piles of money.
The Oscars will air on ABC on Sunday, March 27.
