Spider-Man: No Way Home is the biggest movie of the moment, bringing people to movie theaters in numbers that haven’t been seen since before the pandemic. The latest Marvel film brought the multiverse concepts introduced in Loki to the big screen, as Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) botched up a spell that resulted in villains and alternate Spider-Men from movies past crossing over into the MCU. It paid homage to a nearly two-decade legacy of Spider-Man movies, and it did it with panache.
The fans clearly approve. No Way Home is now officially projected to unseat James Cameron’s Avatar from its spot at the top of the domestic box office. Avatar currently holds the number three position for gross domestic box office at $749.8 million. This past weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home continued its streak of dominance and crossed the $749 million threshold, closing the gap to less than a million. The Hollywood Reporter projects that No Way Home will surpass Avatar by today. These numbers aren’t adjusted for inflation, but still it’s pretty impressive.
Spider-Man: No Way Home to become third highest grossing film domestically
The number one spot at the domestic box office is held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which brought in $936.7 million; Avengers: Endgame comes in second at $858.4 million. Spider-Man: No Way Home is still a ways off from those films, but the fact that it is about to surpass James Cameron’s sci-fi epic speaks volumes to the film’s resonance with audiences.
Internationally, Avatar remains the champ at $2.84 billion. After being knocked out of its top spot by Avengers: Endgame back in 2019, Avatar had a limited run re-release in China last year to reclaim its vaunted position as the highest grossing film of all time. Spider-Man: No Way Home currently sits at $1.77 billion internationally, which is even more impressive when you consider that it hasn’t released at all in China, which accounts for the largest biggest box office market.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is moving toward its ninth weekend in theaters and shows little sign of slowing down.
