The second season of The Umbrella Academy ended with our titular motley crew of superhero misfits returning to their own time after a frenzied adventure in the past, only to find that they had been replaced by a whole new group of superpowered individuals led by their dead brother Ben: the Sparrow Academy.

How will that conflict go down? Star Emmy Raver-Lampman, who plays Allison Hargreeves, told Collider what she could. “I was just excited because it feels like there’s some epic rivalry that’s about to happen,” she said. “And I think The Umbrella Academy, they’ve never truly been matched before. They struggle and they have their moments, but that’s all exciting, and you never know if they’re going to rise to the top. But then they always do, and I don’t know that they’ve ever been matched in this kind of way where they’re staring at a different version of themselves. I’m excited for everybody to see what happens.”

According to Raver-Lampman, the next season of the show will go a bit further afield of The Umbrella Academy graphic novels by Gerard Way, even though he and showrunner Steve Blackman are always talking. I don’t doubt that they both know what the other thinks about the show’s direction. “I think there will always be a connection there, but the further we get into The Umbrella Academy, the TV show, I think it’s finding its own way,” she said. “It’s finding its own route, which is exciting. … This third season, we’re really, really doing our own thing, and I think the show has found some really cool plots to follow and explore.”

"I think our show has really found its tone. I think that’s part because we’ve all been working on the show for so long together now. Also Steve and the writers really know how to write for the characters now, and they know how to write for Tom [Hopper] and me and David [Castañeda] and Elliot [Page] and Aidan [Gallagher]. We all feel like we speak for these characters now and have a deeper understanding of them, and also the universe that they exist in."

I know that I’ve gotten more comfortable with the series as it’s gone on and everyone has gotten more comfortable in their roles. Now that everything is firing on all cylinders, I expect season 3 to be the best yet!

When does The Umbrella Academy season 3 premiere on Netflix?

As for when we’ll actually get to see season 3, it’s still up in the air, although Raver-Lampman is hoping it’s sooner rather than later. “I hope this summer because I want to see this season so badly,” she said. “We’ve started doing ADR and it’s a massive season. There’s just a lot of work in post that has to be done.”

The Umbrella Academy is one of the many, many shows that suffered from delays due to the ongoing pandemic, but at least the finish line is in sight.
