Hot off the heels of successes like Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Army of the Dead, director Zack Snyder is turning his attention toward Rebel Moon, a Netflix sci-fi movie that began as a pitch for a new Star Wars film. You can see it in the synopsis: it focuses on a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that’s threatened by a tyrant named Belisarius. To protect their home, the colonists turn to a mysterious young woman who recruits warriors to help defend the town.

Snyder has been open about wanting to turn Rebel Moon into a major franchise, so whoever gets cast in this thing could have a job for a while. We already knew that Star Trek Beyond’s Sofia Boutella was playing the lead. Now, Snyder has announced the rest of the cast, which includes Pacific Rim veteran Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Bae Doona and Ray Fisher.

Ray Fisher worked with Snyder on Justice League, where he played Cyborg. But at this point his biggest claim to fame is probably blowing the whistle on replacement director Joss Whedon, whom Fisher said exhibited “gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable” behavior on set. That started off a chain of events that basically ended with Whedon exiled from show business. But if Rebel Moon is a success, it could help Fisher forge a whole new path forward, and it makes sense that Snyder is the guy to help him set out on it.

We don’t know anything about Fisher’s character other than that he’s named Blood Axe, per The Hollywood Reporter. Hounsou’s character is named General Titus, and Doona is playing a sword-wielding baddie. It definitely sounds like a Zack Snyder-esque cast of characters.

There’s no release date for Rebel Moon as of yet, but production is supposed to begin in April and last through November, which is a long life cycle for a movie. But when you’re laying the foundation for what you hope will be a successful cinematic universe, I guess you can’t be too careful.
