House of the Dragon has “a pretty good shot” at a second season
By Dan Selcke
HBO and HBO Max programming chief Casey Bloys has been sounding off about House of the Dragon lately, which has given us quite a bit to chew on. He’s already revealed that production has ended on season 1 and outlined the network’s strategy when it comes to additional Game of Thrones spinoffs. Now, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he weighed in on a potential trailer, season 2, and whether House of the Dragon might go up against Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
When will we see a trailer for House of the Dragon?
HBO already dropped a teaser trailer for House of the Dragon last year. The new show is set some 200 years before Game of Thrones, during a war known as the Dance of the Dragons where rival factions of the Targaryen dynasty fought over the Iron Throne, complete with dragon-vs-dragon battles.
It’s a good teaser, but fans everywhere want a proper-sized trailer, ideally with some finished visual effects; we want to see those dragons!
Naturally, Bloys didn’t give us a firm date for when such a thing might come to pass, but he did what he could. “I don’t even want to say ‘soon’ but you’ll start to see material … if I say ‘soon,’ I’ll leave that vague. So maybe soon.”
We’ll take it.
Will House of the Dragon get a second season?
The first season of House of the Dragon will run for 10 episodes. It’s a complicated series, so if HBO wants to have another season out in a reasonable time it might be a good idea to give it an early renewal, but Bloys isn’t quite ready to pull the trigger, although he is optimitic:
"Typically speaking, I like to take an approach where we will talk about what a second season might look like and talk about scripts. But we tend to like to see how a show performs. That said, if I were betting, I’d say there’s a pretty good shot that House of the Dragon will get a season two. But we tend to like things to air and give it some time. That said, on most shows, we’ll do preparation and put ourselves in a good position to move forward."
Again, we’ll take it.
House of the Dragon vs The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Finally, THR asked if House of the Dragon might premiere around the same time as another big-name genre show this year, like Halo in March or The Rings of Power in September. Ever-unflappable, Bloys doesn’t sound too worried about it:
"A good operating principal is not to worry too much about what other people have airing and to keep your eyes on your own work. I feel very good about House of Dragon and we’ll premiere it when we premiere it."
As for when it will the show will actually premiere, we’re still in the dark about that, but odds are it’ll be in the back half of the year.
