Next year is going to be all kinds of wonderful when Doctor Who returns with former showrunner Russell T Davies back at the helm. His run as the guy in charge ended back during the David Tennant days; that stretch is still beloved among fans, so we’re all looking forward to his return.

Speaking with RadioTimes, Davies shared what it’s been like to get back in the writing room, and what Whovians can expect from him now. He stressed that the series is going to feel “new.”

“There are things coming up that are brand new ways of telling the stories that have never been done before, so it just feels new,” said Davies. “I wouldn’t go back if it wasn’t feeling new. But that’s the thing about Doctor Who – every episode is new. Every single episode. I’m sitting here now, 10 pages away from a climax thinking, ‘God, I’ve never written in this territory before – this is strange and new’ – so it’s always new. It’s a self-renewing show.”

Russell T Davies is taking Doctor Who somewhere new

Unfortunately, we’ll be waiting a while to see all this new stuff; Davies will take over in time for the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary in 2023. But it sounds like it will be well worth the wait!

Until then, we have two Doctor Who specials to look forward to this year. They will mark the final time we see Jodie Whittaker in the lead role. It’s going to be tough to say goodbye, but based on what Davies has to say, I think we have a very exciting future to look forward to.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the hoopla surrounding who is going to take over for Whittaker! There are many theories and guesses, so hopefully we’ll know sooner rather than later. Seriously though, the anticipation is killing us!
