Watch the new trailer for HBO pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death
By Daniel Roman
It’s a dangerous business being a pirate…especially when you’re the kind of pirate who’s out to kill people with kindness. HBO Max has unveiled a new trailer for Our Flag Means Death, its upcoming pirate comedy from David Jenkins (People of Earth) and Taika Waititi. The trailer gives us the best look we’ve gotten by far at the show…and it’s absolutely ridiculous in the best way. Check it out:
Rhys Darby is Stede Bonnet, the Gentlemen Pirate
As you can see, Our Flag Means Death looks like a pirate show with all the comedic sensibilities of a series like What We Do In The Shadows, and I love it. It stars Rhy Darby (Flight of the Concords) as Stede Bonnet, a British aristocrat who escapes his suffocating life of luxury for a chance at adventure on the high seas. Bonnet hopes he can add his name to the annals of pirate history and stand alongside the likes of Blackbeard and Captain Kidd…but as he soon finds out, there’s a lot more to pirating than simply declaring yourself one.
But when has a little danger ever stopped anyone? Bonnet becomes the captain of a ship called the Revenge and crosses paths with Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), who appears to teach him the nuances of the pirating life. There’s swashbuckling, crab-fighting, looting, battles on the high seas, and even a book heist where Bonnet tries to replace all the books he’s stealing with ones he’s already read. In short, this is exactly the kind of absurdity we’d hope for from the creative minds behind it.
The show is loosely based on the adventures of real-life pirate Stede Bonnet, who did indeed come to be known as “The Gentlemen Pirate.” We’ll never know exactly how funny his actual exploits, but it certainly makes for a great premise for a comedy show.
The trailer also gives us our first look at Game of Thrones alum Joel Fry (Hizdahr Zo Loraq), as well as Fred Armisen (Portlandia) and Leslie Jones (Ghostbusters, SNL). Our Flag Means Death also stars Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn (Hodor from Game of Thrones), Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, and Nat Faxon.
Our Flag Means Death premieres on HBO Max on March 3. Its first season will contain 10 episodes.
The Boys animated spinoff Diabolical trailer
Our Flag Means Death isn’t the only show getting a fresh new trailer this week. Prime Video also unveiled its first full-length trailer for its animated spinoff of The Boys. Diabolical promises to be just as twisted as the mothership show, and this trailer gives us plenty of hints at that. This show is a practical who’s-who of comedic talent behind it. Each of its 12-14 minute episodes will have a different creator at the helm, including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Awkwafina, Andy Samberg, Aisha Tyler, Justin Roiland, and The Boys comic creator, Garth Ennis.
The voice acting cast is just filled with notable names. It includes Awkwafina, Michael Cera, Don Cheadle, Chace Crawford, Giancarlo Esposito, Eliot Glazer, Jason Isaacs, Kumail Nanjiani, Justin Roiland, Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg, Ben Schwartz, Elisabeth Shue, Christian Slater, Kevin Smith, Antony Starr, Nasim Pedrad, Kenan Thompson, Aisha Tyler, Youn Yuh Jung, Kimberly Brooks, Nicole Byer, Frances Conroy, Asjha Cooper, Chris Diamantopolous, Jermaine Fowler, Emily Gordon, Grey Griffin, Randall Duk Kim, David Marciano, Xolo Maridueña, Dominique McElligott, Caleb McLaughlin, Colby Minifie, Eugene Mirman, Retta, Kevin Michael Richardson, Somali Rose, Parker Simmons, Ursula Taherian, Fred Tatasciore, Sean Patrick Thomas, Angela Marie Volpe, Gary Antony Williams, and Jenny Yokobori.
So yeah. This one is definitely going to be pretty diabolical.
Diabolical’s first season will consist of eight episodes, which all drop Friday, March 4 on Prime Video. The Boys season 3 premieres on June 3.
