Spider-Man: No Way Home is by far the most successful movie of the pandemic era; in fact, it recently surpassed Avatar to net the third highest domestic box office tally in the history of the United States, and Tom Holland’s inclusion in Uncharted  helped that movie run away with the box office this past weekend.

Meanwhile, elsewhere at Disney, the company is prepping approximately 10,000 new Star Wars TV series to air on Disney+. It only makes sense that Disney would want to yoke these worlds together. Ergo, DiscussingFilm reports that Disney is talking to No Way Home director Jon Watts about helming yet another new Star Wars show, this one aimed at young adults.

No Way Home director to tackle High Republic show?

Rumors about this show have been swirling for a while. According to Collider, it will be set during the High Republic era, hundreds of years before the original Star Wars trilogy back when the Jedi order was at the height of its power and influence. Collider has been informed of casting calls for characters named Kylie, Faye, Wyatt and Ned; for at least some of those roles, Disney is looking for actors who can play between the ages of 11 and 12. The idea is that they’re Padawans. Cinelinx, which has been on the front lines of reporting about this rumor, calls the show “Stranger Things in space.”

And while this is a rumor, enough independent sources are talking about the show to convince me that it’s probably happening. Would anyone be surprised that Disney, which is busy preparing a network of Star Wars shows, is working on another one aimed at younger people? The studio is all about getting as many eyes on its content as possible, so it’s very easy to believe that they would go after that demographic. Plus, they’ve been publishing books about the High Republic era for a while now so it was only a matter of time before the setting appeared onscreen.

We don’t know when the New Republic show may come out, although Collider has it that filming could start as early as June. In the meantime, the next Star Wars series on its way to Disney+ is Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will premiere on May 25.
