Between Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Loki and What If…?, Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is all about exploring the infinite possibilities of the multiverse. Multiverse of Madness will give us our most in-depth look at it yet. In the most recent trailer, many fans believe they’ve spotted Patrick Stewart back in his iconic role as Charles Xavier, although the actor himself denies his involvement. Whether he’s in it or not, I’m sure the movie will have plenty of surprises.

It isn’t just Marvel interested in the multiverse, either. Later this year, The Flash will see the much-anticipated return of Michael Keaton’s beloved version of Batman. The multiverse is all the rage right now, but Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo wonders if it might outstay its welcome. “Too much of one thing is a bad thing, but I think there are enough creators and innovators in the space where you can expect to be surprised,” he said during Dice Summit 2022. “Just don’t expect corporations to surprise you.”

"The corporate agenda is: Do you like chocolate ice cream? Well here’s chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, here’s chocolate ice cream with fudge…It’s their job to turn the money printer on. It’s the creative’s job to say, ‘Well shit, I don’t know if I want to watch that.’"

Will the creatives speak up loud enough in this instance, or will the corporations give us more multiverse than we want to handle?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will live up to its name and then some

Speaking to Disney’s D23 magazine, Multiverse of Madness co-producer Richie Palmer explained why the word “madness” is in the title. “We honor each definition of the word ‘madness’ in this movie,” he said. “For example, it’s not just the craziness of what an alternate universe might look like, feel like, or sound like. When you see that there are infinite versions of yourself across infinite universes and you’re a different person in them different facets of you rise to the top.”

Might this be the craziest, zaniest, Marvel movie ever created? We’ll find out when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres on May 6, 2022!
