There’s a lot of Outlander news in the air. The sixth season of Starz’s flagship show airs in just a couple weeks, and we got to see the premiere! And now, Variety reports that Starz is developing a prequel series.
A disclaimer at the top: this is not something Starz announced itself, but rather something Variety has ferreted out with its sources. There’s no guarantee this show, whatever it is, will actually go forward. That said, Variety reports that Outlander showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is putting together a writer’s room and that they’re looking to begin work on the series in the coming weeks.
As for what the prequel could be about, there’s no way to know. Outlander author Diana Gabaldon is working on a prequel novel about Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, the parents of lead character Jamie Fraser, but it’s not out yet.
An Outlander prequel show is coming
It’s also possible that Starz is looking for something to replace Outlander as that show enters its old age. The sixth season is coming around the corner, and after that there will be a seventh season with 16 episodes. There’s no indication things will stop then — surely Starz doesn’t want them to — but it’s usually around this time that it gets harder to hold a production together, especially as the careers of stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe heat up.
But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. The new season premieres on March 6.
