Everyone is looking for “the next Game of Thrones,” which means a lot of studios are making expensive fantasy properties, whether it’s Netflix with The Witcher or Amazon with The Rings of Power or HBO itself with Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon. But maybe “the next Game of Thrones“– by which we mean a TV show that generates a ton of buzz and has a huge audience — isn’t a fantasy property at all.

HBO, always on the cutting edge of these things, has a new flagship series: the drama Euphoria, which stars Zendaya as Rue, a high schooler dealing with the pressures of love, loss and addiction. According to Variety, the season 2 finale drew 6.6 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max, a new series high. According to HBO itself, episodes of Euphoria season 2 have averaged 16.3 million viewers, with the season 2 premiere racking up 19 million views. This makes Euphoria the most-watched series in HBO’s history…save Game of Thrones, of course.

Euphoria is also the most tweeted about show of the new decade so far, which was another title Game of Thrones routinely held. Euphoria still has a while to go before it can post Game of Thrones numbers, but it’s great to see an original TV show like this taking off.

Euphoria comes for the Game of Thrones crown

My confession is that I still haven’t watched Euphoria; I keep hearing about how good it is but I just haven’t found the time. I’ll have to change that soon.

And hey, maybe HBO could yoke together it’s two biggest shows. Does anyone else think Zendaya would be a really good casting choice for the dragon-rider Nettles in House of the Dragon?
