DC’s Legends of Tomorrow showrunner teases the season 7 finale
By Ariba Bhuvad
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is all set to wrap up its seventh season (I can’t believe it!) this week. It’s been an interesting season, to say the least, and rather slow. The usual upbeat comedic feel has been a bit MIA, and it looks like this may have been on purpose.
Last week, The CW aired the penultimate episode of the season, which felt a lot like a series finale. It almost made me wonder if they think the series is not going to get renewed. The episode centered around the Legends getting a glimpse of their futures. It was a very bittersweet episode, and honestly, even though this season hasn’t been great, I would be sad if the show came to an end.
Co-showrunner Phil Klemmer spoke to SYFY Wire about this choice. “Episode 12 felt like a finale to us,” he said. “It was like a deep breath, a calm before the plunge. Finales are really hard, people are really tired. It’s like having to run a 100-yard dash after completing a marathon.
"So a lot of times we kind of lose those personal stories, because sometimes the plot or mythology is just like a tide, you have to wrap up all these things. There have been seasons where I feel like the smaller stories kind of washed away. So one thing we’ve learned is, sometimes the smallest stories are the most gratifying and interesting. That’s why we wanted to take that deep breath."
What’s ahead for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow?
According to Klemmer, they wanted to take Legends of Tomorrow down a different path and focus more on each individual character and their development, rather than focusing on them as a team. So while this season has been quite slow, I do see the logic behind the choice that Klemmer and his team made. It was a nice change of pace to see more of the character’s history and how they became who they are.
But if you were like me and bothered by the pacing of the story this season, Klemmer promises that the finale aims to please. He knows that long-time fans are expecting some sort of wild cliffhanger or big twist. It’s just what we’ve become accustomed to!
“A finale is a chance to blow it out and just like leave it all on the field, spend all your money. You also get this chance, as you’re resolving one season, to try and plan for the next,” Klemmer explained. “We’ve had Constantine show up with a dragon’s head to kick off an episode, or Hourman showing up and telling the Legends they’re in trouble. So it’s always a question of how do you outdo yourself? By the time you get to Season 7 people are kind of desensitized to our surprises, so the trick is figuring out how to zig where they might expect us to zag?”
Whether we will be zigging or zagging, I just hope that DC’s Legends of Tomorrow leaves us wanting more. As of right now, The CW has not renewed the show, so for all we know, this could very well be the final episode ever. Hopefully The CW won’t do this show dirty like that.
While we wait to hear about the future of Legends of Tomorrow, be sure to tune in for the season 7 finale, “Knocked Down, Knocked Up,” Wednesday night on The CW!
