The Witcher season 3 is not coming in March 2022
By WiC Staff
The Witcher is one of the biggest fantasy shows of the moment. Season 2 of Netflix’s monster-hunting drama was one of the platforms largest hits, racking up more than 2.2 billion minutes watched during its release week alone. It’s safe to say that Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri are here to stay.
But season 2 left off with some pretty big cliffhangers, so of course we’re all eagerly waiting to see what happens next. After defeating the Deathless Mother’s attack on the witcher’s keep of Kaer Morhen, Geralt, Ciri, and Yen got their first glimpse of the spectral Wild Hunt riders during a brief visit to another world. Fans of the games will know that this does not bode well for our heroes. Add to that the reveal that Emhyr var Emreis, the leader of Nilfgaard known as the White Flame, is Ciri’s father, and the stakes are high for season 3 of The Witcher.
But when will we get to watch it? How long must we wait? Let’s round up everything we’ve learned about production on The Witcher season 3.
When does The Witcher season 3 come out on Netflix?
The Witcher season 2 was a marked improvement over season 1. But we live in the age of infinite streaming options and ever-shorter patience. So what do we know so far?
As of this moment, The Witcher season 3 does not have a set release date. Considering that season 2 only came to the platform in December, it’s likely going to be a while before we see the follow-up. However, we do have some clues about how production on season 3 is going.
Late last year, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich confirmed that the scripts for season 3 had been written. As of January 18, the show began scouting for new filming locations for its third season. Executive producer Steven Gaub posted some behind-the-scenes photos showing not only new outdoor locations, but giving glimpses of some of the indoor sets being built.
The latest bit of news came around two weeks ago, when we learned that the show was casting a villain from the books for season 3: the Professor, a bespectacled assassin whose pursuit of Yennefer and Ciri eventually leads him afoul of Geralt. We can all guess how that turns out.
Considering that The Witcher season 3 has not yet begun filming and that it’s a rather effects-heavy show, it seems entirely likely that we won’t see new episodes in 2022. But Netflix is releasing the limited prequel series Blood Origin at some point during this year, which will hopefully take some of the sting out of it. As soon as we get word of when that’s coming to the platform, we’ll spread word to all corners of the Continent.
