Amazon is taking a big swing with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a wildly expensive new show based on the creations of J.R.R. Tolkien. But when will we get to see the fruits of their labors?

Not for a while, unfortunately. Amazon announced a while back that The Rings of Power will premiere on September 2, 2022. That’s not that far off, but it’s longer than we’d like to wait considering how interesting the trailer looks:

At the least, the thing looks ambitious. I don’t even care if it’s good, I’m just looking forward to the conversation that springs up around it.

Is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power coming in March 2022?

Once again, no, although we do have some details about the show we can discuss in the meantime. The Rings of Power is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, after the fall of the Valar Morgoth but long before characters like Bilbo and Frodo come into the story. There are still plenty of elves in Middle-earth, a long-lived breed of men live on an island nation called Númenor, and Sauron is hatching a plan to rule over the land by making a variety of rings…

It’s not a part of Tolkien legendarium that has ever been explored in much detail, which means that Amazon is going to be making up a lot of stuff to fill out the story. Will it be a smashing success or a miserable miss? That’s what we’re all waiting to see.
