The Last of Us is a 2013 video game from Naughty Dog, a harrowing zombie adventure that tasks the player with crossing a post-apocalyptic United States in the hopes of finding a cure to the disease that has brought down society. It’s an intensely personal, well-written game that focuses on character weighty themes of right and wrong. And now, HBO is going to adapt the game (and possibly its 2020 sequel) as a TV show.

The signs are good. Playing the lead roles of Joel and Ellie are Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, both veterans of HBO’s Game of Thrones. And of course, Pascal has blown up as the lead in The Mandalorian. And shepherding the whole thing are Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, who wrote the games, and Craig Mazin, who worked on HBO’s Chernobyl, which was an excellent drama.

So the pieces are all there for a hit show. Unfortunately, it’ll be a while before we see it.

The Last of Us won’t be out on HBO until 2023

“I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys recently said in an interview. “[Producer] Craig [Mazin] did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing so I’m excited for it but it will not be in ’22.”

So there you go: not only will The Last of Us not be coming to HBO in March of 2022, but it won’t be coming in 2022 at all. It’s a bummer that we’ll have to wait so long to see episodes, but hopefully all the time they’re putting into production will be worth it.
