Given the glut of superhero shows airing nowadays, it can be difficult for newcomers to stand out. But that’s exactly what Amazon Prime’s adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic Invincible achieved when it dropped last year. The animated show was quickly renewed for two more seasons. And while news about them has few and far between over the last year, showrunner Simon Racioppa has just given us an update.

Invincible follows Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), the son of famed superhero Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). As he comes into his own superpowers, he finds that the hero game is a lot more morally ambiguous than advertised. By the end of the first season (SPOILER INCOMING), Mark realizes that his father is not the hero he thought he was. Rather, Omni-Man has been gradually preparing Earth for an invasion by his home planet of Viltrum. The two engage in a bloody battle that eventually sees Omni-Man leave Earth.

Based on the comics, seasons 2 and 3 of the show will up the ante. There’s a multiverse side to the story, a cosmic element, and so much more. We’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg.

The Invincible team is “working hard” on new seasons

Speaking to ComicBookMovie, Racioppa explained why it’s taking so long for new content to drop, and assured eager fans that the team is indeed hard at work in bringing us the next chapter of Invincible. Animation almost always takes longer than live-action, after all.

“We’re working hard on it,” he said. “The one thing I’d tell people is we’ve been working hard on it for a longer period than they think. A lot of people assume we’ve just got started on it, and that’s not true. We’ve been working on it for a while now. But, it’s a big show.”

"To do it properly takes time. We’re still in the pandemic. We’re hopefully coming out of it, but that makes things a little slower too. Everybody is working very hard on it; I think you’re going to be very happy with it. I hope so. We want to make it as badly as everyone wants to see it. We’re deep in. I wish it was already done and I wish it was finished, but it’s just not. We’re deep into it; literally, this afternoon, that’s what I’m doing – more work on that show! Right after these interviews, I’m back on to Invincible."

Racioppa is also the showrunner of Amazon’s animated spinoff of The Boys, Diabolical, which is a similarly gory animated adventure. It looks like Prime has finally found its superhero niche: violent, adult-orientated satires.

Invincible season 1 is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
