The Batman hasn’t even been out a week, and already it’s made just north of $300 million at the global box office. Clearly Warner Bros. has a hit on its hand, and a good thing too, because the studio has plans for this movie…big plans.

For instance, we’ve known that the studio has had The Batman spinoff TV series in development for a while. One of them started as a show about the Gotham police department and seems to have transitioned to being about Arkham Asylum. The other was always about Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, played in the movie by Colin Farrell under a mountain of makeup. Now, Deadline has confirmed that Warner Bros. has ordered The Penguin straight to series, meaning we’re guaranteed to see it at some point on HBO Max.

Colin Farrell “couldn’t be more excited” about The Penguin show

“The world that [director] Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” Farrell said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

The Batman introduced us to the Penguin before he achieved legendary status. It looks like the show will take him the rest of the way. Might Pattinson’s Batman show up at some point to smack him down?

Anyway, Reeves also made a statement. “Colin exploded off the screen as the Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill. Dylan and I are so excited to work with Lauren in continuing Oz’s story as he grabs violently for power in Gotham.”

Dylan Clark and Lauren LeFranc are both executive producers on the show, with the latter also serving as director and showrunner.

There’s no release date for The Penguin yet, but now that The Batman cinematic universe is officially underway, I’m sure WarnerMedia will make it a priority.
