Chris Pine “thrilled” to return to Star Trek (but he’s still waiting on a script)

A couple of weeks ago, Paramount announced a bunch of new shows and movies on the horizon, including a fourth Star Trek movie starring the likes of Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Zoe Saldaña (Uhura). “We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast,” said producer J.J. Abrams.

That surely pleased fans who’d been waiting for a new film ever since Star Trek Beyond in 2016, but there was an issue: apparently the cast members — some of them, at least — had no idea this announcement was coming.

Since then, they seem to have come around, although there are still a lot of hurdles to clear before filming can begin. They need a story, to start.

The fourth Star Trek movie starts shooting soon…but there’s no script yet

“I’m thrilled,” Pine recently told the AP about the movie. “I mean, this is the best gig of all time. [I’m] looking forward to reading a script, looking forward to getting back to work, looking forward to seeing the rest of the gang. Yeah.”

That note — that the movie is going ahead but the actors haven’t been given a script — was something Pine echoed when talking to Variety. “We’re usually the last people to find out, but I do know we’re all excited,” he said. “Whenever they want to send us a script, we’re ready for it…We haven’t seen a script. I don’t know anything about it.”

One more note, from Entertainment Tonight:

"I know we are all excited to come back and would love to come back. This is a tight family. We’ve been working together for fifteen years… I think we’re ready to get back to work and excited to see a script, whenever that should come in and excited for Matt [Shakman] to direct it and excited to work."

So this a good news-bad news situation. There’s another Star Trek movie coming, but it’s supposed to shoot in under a year and there’s still no script. We wonder if Paramount made the announcement hoping to drum up hype and figured they could fill in the particulars later. Let’s hope it works out for them.

Star Trek 4, or whatever it ends up being called, is due out on December 22, 2023. You can currently see Pine in the espionage thriller All the Old Knives.
