“Winter is coming.” “You win or you die.” “Not today.” Game of Thrones produced a lot of catch phrases, although one of the most memorable is also one of the shortest: “Shame.” Septa Unella said that over and over again as she marched Cersei Lannister naked through the streets of King’s Landing in the season 5 finale, ringing her little golden bell. And thus a meme was born.
The actor who played Unella, Hannah Waddingham, has gone to great success, even winning an Emmy for her work on Ted Lasso. But of course she still gets asked about the infamous Walk of Shame. “on’t screw up otherwise I’ll get you with my bell,” she joked during a visit to The Drew Barrymore Show. “I’ve got my bell.”
Yes, that does indeed mean that Waddingham got to keep the shame bell from the show. “That’s when you know that you’re dead in the show because they’re like here you are here is your hero prop.” Imagine the fear she could strike into the hearts of anyone who annoyed her; if I had the actual shame bell I would break it out at every opportunity. I would have to be stopped.
Hannah Waddingham is in Hocus Pocus 2
Waddingham may never get completely away from playing the Shame Nun, but she has a lot of stuff going on. That includes a role in Hocus Pocus 2, a sequel to the cult favorite 1993 movie Hocus Pocus, about a trio of long-dead witches who come back to life and terrorize a small town on Halloween…in a funny way, mostly.
The original stars of the movie — namely Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — are returning for the sequel, and Waddingham was bowled over when they wanted her to join them for lunch. “So I arrive for my costume fitting in Rhode Island and the second AD was like, ‘The ladies would love to meet you,’ and I was like, ‘Them? The witchy ladies?’” she explained. “And he was like, ‘Yeah they’re just finishing up a scene, but if you’d like to come to set…’ and I was like, ‘Yes please,’ and got driven there and they came off set and there were Bette, Kathy, and Sarah Jessica Parker sitting there having their lunch in a little box like we all do on set in their costumes.”
"And I said I just wanted to come and quickly say hello and Bette was like, ‘Come and sit,’ and I was just like, ‘No, no, no you’re having your time, I get it it’s downtime.’ ‘No, no come and sit with us,’ and they were just so delicious and Bette was like well played, well played for this year and I thought, ‘I can’t even believe you know I exist, I can’t cope with it,’ it was just insane."
Onward and upward.
Hocus Pocus 2 is coming to Disney+ sometime this year, although we don’t know exactly when.
