The Last Kingdom has finally wrapped up its fifth and final season on Netflix, bringing to a close Uhtred’s years-long quest to reclaim his ancestral home of Bebbanburg. It’s an ending worthy of the journey, but the show still left a few plot threads dangling to indicate that life for these characters will go on, even if their TV show is over.

For instance, towards the end of the series finale, after Uhtred has reclaimed Bebbanburg, Hild — Uhtred’s old friend and a warrior nun — walks toward the fortress alongside a young man named Osbert. She tells Osbert they’re going to Bebbanburg to meet the new lord, who may know something of his origins. “You think he may have once met my father?” Osbert asks. “Yes,” Hild replies, a smile in her eyes. “Something like that.”

So who is Osbert? It ends up we’ve met him before.

Osbert is Uhtred’s son on The Last Kingdom

Granted, the last time we saw Osbert he was a baby. This was back in season 3, when Uhtred returned to his home to find that his wife Gisela had died giving birth to their new son. Hild helped deliver the baby and broke the bad news to Uhtred.

At the time, Uhtred was so grief-stricken he could barely hold young Osbert, which incidentally is also Uhtred’s original name. Plus he was dealing with a lot of stuff with King Alfred at the time, and soon fled Wessex after Alfred banished him. Uhtred later returned and reconnected with his two other children by Gisela — Stiorra and Young Uhtred — but he never saw Osbert again.

But that’s about to change. Apparently Hild has been watching over Osbert and is about to make reintroductions!

And we may get more of Osbert’s story in the upcoming Last Kingdom movie Seven Kings Must Die. This tale isn’t over quite yet.
