Ruth Wilson teases His Dark Materials season 3 release date
By Daniel Roman
His Dark Materials is one of many fantasy shows to come over the past couple of years. Based on the bestselling books by Philip Pullman, the series follows orphan girl Lyra Belacqua as she goes on a quest that begins as a simple rescue mission but grows into a dimension-hopping journey spanning multiple worlds. Yes, there are talking polar bears and shapeshifting daemon animal companions, but there are also scenes that take place in our world, here in the 21st century. It’s a pretty wild story, and the show has been doing a solid job of adapting Pullman’s books.
Per Digital Spy, Ruth Wilson, who plays the terrifying Mrs. Coulter, recently appeared on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show where she talked a bit about the show’s upcoming third season. And she has some good news for fans: Wilson confirmed that the show will return “this November.”
We’ve known for a while that His Dark Materials season 3 would be coming out in 2022, but this is the closest thing we’ve gotten to an official release date. So while Mrs. Coulter herself might be stingy with any information that doesn’t further her own aims, Wilson is sure to win some points with fans for this one. Unless there’s some kind of devious hidden agenda at play…
His Dark Materials season 3 is coming in November
Wilson also claimed that this season will see the show’s many conflicts “come to a head.” Considering that it’s based on The Amber Spyglass, the final installment of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials book series, there’s little doubt that’s true. The novel features a massive war between various factions, including the angels of the Kingdom of Heaven, so it should be an epic watch.
The Amber Spyglass features a pretty interesting storyline for Mrs. Coulter in particular, who has established herself as a fascinatingly gray villain. She does awful stuff…but she also has a soft spot for her daughter Lyra, and at times does things to help her. “[It’s] very exciting,” Wilson said. “You’ll see more of Asriel, and Marisa, Mrs Coulter, and Lyra. That all comes out in November.”
So there we have it. Not an exact release date, but if Mrs. Coulter herself is telling us that the show will be out in November, we’ll believe it. Seasons 1 and 2 of His Dark Materials are available to stream on HBO Max.
