Will there be a sixth season of The Last Kingdom?
By WiC Staff
Netflix has released the fifth season of The Last Kingdom, and it lives up to the high standards the show has set for itself. Things seem pretty tied up by the end, with Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) finally achieving the goal he’s been driving at ever since the very first episode. So is his journey over?
Well…not exactly. You see, the fifth season of The Last Kingdom is indeed the last…but it’s not the final bit of Last Kingdom content we’ll get from Netflix. The streamer is also making a Last Kingdom movie called Seven Kings Must Die that will pick up with Uhtred and crew sometime after the end of season 5.
The first five seasons of The Last Kingdom adapt the first 10 of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories novels. But the author wrote another three before wrapping the series up. We assume that Seven Kings Must Die will draw from those. There’s no release date as of yet.
Is The Last Kingdom a sequel to Vikings?
As long as we’re answering commonly asked questions about The Last Kingdom, some fans wonder if it’s a sequel to Vikings, another historical show. The answer is no, it’s not a sequel, but it does have a lot of things in common.
Both Vikings and The Last Kingdom are set during the same period of English history and share several characters in common, including King Alfred the Great and the Viking warlord Ubba.
Generally speaking, The Last Kingdom is set later in the timeline than Vikings, although both series play fast and loose with history at times, so it’s not accurate to call one a sequel to the other. Better to call them companion pieces.
