The Boys star Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko) details an attack she recently suffered walking down the street in Los Angeles. “They need to be held accountable.”
The Boys star Karen Fukuhara, who plays Kimiko on Amazon’s violent superhero satire, has opened up on Instagram about suffering a violent, random attack on the street. “I rarely share about my private life but something happened today that I thought was important,” she detailed on Instagram. “I was walking to a cafe for some coffee and a man struck me in the back of my head. It came out of nowhere. We made no eye contact before, I wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. It came to my surprise and my hat flew off. By the time I looked back, he was a few feet away from me (he must have kept walking after hitting me).”
According to Fukuhara, the man walked away “[a]fter a few seconds of staring at each other, and him yelling at me. She says that this is the first time she’s been harmed physically like this, although she has endured “racial slurs and hurtful actions” in the past.
There’s been a well-documented rise in anti-Asian violence across the United States over the past couple of years, and unfortunately this attack fits right in with that pattern. “I write this, because I’ve had conversations with multi-racial friends who had no idea these hate crimes happen to everyday, regular people — people that they share meals with,” Fukuhara continued. “I felt it was important to raise awareness…What satisfaction are these perpetrators getting from hitting women, Asians, the elderly? They need to be held accountable.”
There’s no word on whether Fukuhara intends to file a police report. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the attack happened in Los Angeles.
Several of Fukuhara’s costars on The Boys voiced their support, including Jack Quaid (Hughie), Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk) and Chace Crawford (the Deep). The lot of them will return for The Boys season 3 on June 3.
