Ever since Robert Kirkman’s superhero comic Invincible first started hitting store shelves, it was never shy about promoting itself, with many covers proclaiming it to be the “best superhero comic in the universe.” And last year, the first season of Amazon’s animated adaptation caught the attention of geeks worldwide, racking up serious numbers and cementing itself as one of the biggest players in the increasingly crowded superhero space. Between Marvel, DC, The Boys, The Umbrella Academy, and everything else, getting a new superhero show to stand out is a huge achievement.

Naturally, fans are eager to watch the next season, which if it follows the comics will introduce a lot of new elements, including a multiverse. According to star J.K. Simmons, who voices Omni-Man, we won’t have to wait that much longer.

“Again, always wary of spoilers, but I think I’m allowed to say that we’re going back to work very soon in the recording booth,” Simmons told Discussing Film.

"Now, the lag between us doing our first recordings and the animation being completed is obviously many months and probably more than a year, I would guess. But, yes, Invincible is getting to work in earnest and season two is imminent, I will say. There’s a nice vague term."

J.K. Simmons was “surprised” over how successful Invincible was

Sadly, animation takes a lot more time than live-action, but it’s nice to know that things are moving forward. Simmons went on to discuss how surprised he was at the instant success of Invincible, especially given how unfamiliar he was with the comics prior to working on the show:

"Honestly, because I didn’t know the source material before it was sent to me when I signed on to do Invincible, I was surprised at the impact that it had. It was like most animated things, in that there’s extra freedom there to explore and feel free to take really bold risks. To take the director’s vision and go really far with it in any direction because you know, ultimately, they’re going to make the choices. It was really fun, and I had some really wonderful actors to work with in Steven [Yeun] and Sandra [Oh], and a great cast as a lot of animated projects are getting these days. So I’m looking forward to getting back to work on them."

In addition to the animated show, Invincible is still being made into a live-action movie, or at least it was the last we heard about it. After being stuck in the development stage for a few years, things are very quiet.

Invincible season 2 is on course to premiere sometime in 2023. Season 1 is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
