Will there be a DMZ season 2 on HBO Max?

HBO Max has just debuted DMZ, an adaptation of the comic book of the same name by Brian Wood. The show is set in a dystopian future where the United States is in the midst of a violent civil war. Manhattan is declared a demilitarized zone, meaning that it’s basically left to fend for itself. The show revolves around Alma Ortega (Rosario Dawson) who enters the DMZ from outside in search of her son.

All four episodes of this miniseries dropped on HBO Max this past Thursday, so you can watch the whole thing right now. But is this all there is?

Well, DMZ is billed as a miniseries, so the idea is that the four episodes that are out should tell a complete story. But the ending leaves space for more, so anything is possible.

HBO Max probably won’t bring DMZ back for a second season

DMZ ends with Alma, now going be Zee, winning the governorship of Manhattan and offering a ray of hope to the people there. Her son Christian makes it out while his villainous father ends up in the custody of the U.S. military. The story, which deviates quite a bit from the comic, could certainly keep going, but I kind of doubt it will.

For one thing, HBO has shown itself willing to forego second seasons of popular shows: just ask fans of Watchmen or Lovecraft Country. For another, while it’s only been a few days, I don’t see DMZ reaching the popularity of either of those shows. The fact that HBO dumped all four episodes on a Thursday doesn’t make it seem like the network has a ton of confidence in the series.

But you never know; maybe the show will become a huge hit and fans will demand a second season. We’ll wait and see.
