Avatar: The Last Airbender remains a beloved animated adventure series. The tale of Aang and his friends fighting against the tyrannical Firelord captured the imaginations of fans back when it aired on Nickelodeon in the mid-2000s, and it’s still finding new fans today.

And its reputation will only grow now that Netflix is remaking the series from the ground up, this time in live-action form. We already know who will play a lot of the key roles. Now, thanks to one of those actors, we know how many episodes there will be in the first season, and how long they will last.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who plays Prince Zuko’s even-keeled Uncle Iron, recently stopped by the Handsome Genius Club Radio Show podcast to talk about his career, including the upcoming Netflix series. According to Lee, the first season of Netflix’s Last Airbender show will have eight episodes that will last an hour each.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender remake will have eight episodes

Eight episodes is about standard for a big genre drama like this nowadays. That’s how many episodes the first season of Amazon’s The Wheel of Time show had, for instance. And at eight hours long, the first season of the remake will about as long as the first season of the animated series, which ran for 20 episodes at 24 minutes each.

The question now is whether this remake will be able to both: A) distinguish itself enough from the original such that it feels like it was worth making, and; B) actually be good. Considering how excellent the original show is, that’s a tall mountain to climb, but we’re hoping for the best whenever the series comes out; we don’t have a release date yet.
