After much hemming, hawing, and theorizing, HBO has finally announced an official premiere date for House of the Dragon, its Game of Thrones prequel series. We will return to Westeros on Sunday, August 21.

We’ve been predicting an August premiere date for a while; especially after cast members like Matt Smith began saying more than they were probably supposed to. HBO couldn’t keep this under its hat for much longer.

This also means that House of the Dragon will have a two-week head start on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Amazon’s fabulously expensive new fantasy series. That one premieres on September 2. Things could get very interesting with these two series running side by side. I’m already imagining the back and forth on Twitter…

Anyway, we imagine that a proper trailer for House of the Dragon probably isn’t too far off. In the meantime, enjoy the teaser HBO put out last year:

House of the Dragon is officially coming to HBO and HBO Max in August!

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & BloodHouse of the Dragon is set some 200 years before the story we know. It tells the story of the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal Targaryen civil war that tore Westeros apart.

Featuring betrayals, heartache, politics and lots of dragons, this show has everything it needs to be a proper successor to Game of Thrones. Only a few more months until it takes flight.

See you this summer.
