The Witcher season 2 is one of Netflix’s biggest hits, wracking up more than 2.2 billion minutes watched during its premiere week. Whether they first found the series through the books or the video games, people have loved Geralt of Rivia, Ciri, and Yennefer of Vengerberg for years, and now they’re getting exposed to a whole new audience through the TV show.

Of course, when any season for a massively popular show ends, people always ask the same thing: when will we see the next one?

Netflix hasn’t announced an air date for The Witcher season 3 as of yet, but fansite Redanian Intelligence reports that the show has begun filming as of today, March 31. While this isn’t a confirmation from Netflix itself, Redanian Intelligence has a pretty solid track record when it comes to this kind of thing. They even lay out some of the locations where the show will be filming next, including the Laghi di Fusine lakes in Italy, and Predjama Castle and the Nanos Plateau in Slovenia.

Aside from Redanian Intelligence’s sources, there are several other indicators that the show is back in business. Earlier this week, The Witcher star Henry Cavill posted a picture to his Instagram of the horse who will be playing Geralt’s trusty steed Roach in season 3. If you watched season 2, you know that Roach met an untimely end at the claws of a chernabog. It’s a running gag in The Witcher that Geralt names every horse he owns Roach. Let’s hope that this one fares better than the last.

The Witcher stars are on location for season 3

Cavill also posted a follow-up video to talk about his morning workout routine. In it, he says that he’s “on location.” This lines up with reports that started breaking earlier in the week that he and Freya Allen (Ciri) had both arrived in Slovenia (per ComicBook.com). In addition, producer Steve Gaub, who was posting images to his Instagram account back in January while the crew was scouting locations for the show, shared a post on March 30 which reportedly shows the view from the Nanos Plateau in Slovenia.

On their own, any of these occurrences might be dismissible, but when you put them all together it makes a pretty good case that production on season 3 has indeed begun. Let’s also note that Redanian Intelligence’s sources are telling them filming is beginning on March 31, 2022, which is exactly one year from the date that The Witcher season 2 wrapped production.

As usual, we take all this with a grain of salt until we get an official announcement from Netflix, but the signs are there that production on The Witcher season 3 is moving forward.

Thankfully, we’ve still got plenty of other witchering adventures to tide us over until season 3 hits. Netflix’s prequel series Blood Origin is due out at some point this year. The show stars Michelle Yeoh and is set roughly 1,200 years before the mothership show.

The Witcher seasons 1 and 2 are currently available to stream, as well as the prequel anime film Nightmare of the Wolf. And let’s not forget that CD Projekt Red just announced they are making a fourth Witcher video game. It’s a Witcher renaissance, people!
