His Dark Materials season 3 is “a lot darker, a lot sadder”
By Dan Selcke
For two seasons now, His Dark Materials has been humming along on HBO, doing a respectable job of adapting Philip Pullman’s landmark fantasy series. The third and final season, based on the book The Amber Spyglass, promises to be the biggest and baddest yet, mostly because that’s the most action-packed book in Pullman’s trilogy.
And to hear the cast and crew talk about it, the third season will definitely reflect that. “I think it’s a lot darker, a lot sadder,” star Amir Wilson (Will Parry) said during the Radio Times Covers Party. “It’s definitely more emotional. I think it was definitely harder to film. There’s a lot more going on, I think the introduction of a lot more characters as well. It’s a lot to look forward to.”
Wilson was also asked to describe the season in three words: “love, loss and death.” Uh oh.
The final season of His Dark Materials will be “bigger,” “darker,” and “more romantic”
His Dark Materials season 2 ended with the villainous Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) kidnapping her daughter Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) while Lyra’s father Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) enlisting the help of a number of rebel angels to take down God. Yes, this story is kinda nuts. Will, meanwhile, is determined to rescue Lyra.
“I think it’s bigger,” said executive producer Jane Tranter. “It’s certainly bigger, it’s certainly a little darker, but it’s also more romantic.”
"The third season of His Dark Materials is when all the questions of season 1 and season 2 finally are answered. But it’s when we also start exploring the theme of love, romantic love, and love between mother and child, father and son. And I would say it’s more thrills and spills than season 1 and 2 have been."
I’ve enjoyed His Dark Materials so far, but think the first two seasons suffered from bloat. With The Amber Spyglass being so chock-full of content, I don’t think that’ll happen this time around. Also, I’m looking forward to more talking polar bears and the spineless seed-rolling creatures introduced in the third book. Again, the story is kinda nuts, and I’m here for it.
There’s no release date for His Dark Materials season 3 as of yet.
