Streaming Wars, April 2022: Netflix edges out the competition
By Dan Selcke
Each month, we read over the latest dispatches from the front lines of the Streaming Wars and assess how the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and the rest are doing. Who won the day, who was defeated, and who’s biding their time? We mark it all down on this living graph, which changes every month.
How did the combatants fare in March of 2022? Take a look:
Paramount+
Paramount+ wrapped up a new season of Star Trek: Discovery, continued with Star Trek: Picard, and debuted Halo, its biggest sci-fi swing yet. This may have been the most ambitious month for the streamer yet. Take your points! Points: +3
Netflix
Between buzzy shows like The Last Kingdom and Human Resources, and buzzy movies like The Adam Project and Against the Ice, Netflix brought it like usual. And let’s not forget the arrival of the long-awaited second season of Bridgerton. Points: + 4
Disney+
Disney+ had two releases worth writing home about in March: the new Pixar movie Turning Red and the new Marvel series Moon Knight. Those can carry you far. Points: + 3
Hulu
Between Deep Water, The Dropout, and the third season of Atlanta, there was plenty of enjoy on Hulu this month. Points: +3
HBO Max
HBO Max had big movies like West Side Story and Dune arrive on the service in March, but its originals were only so-so, including the TV series Our Flag Means Death and DMZ. Points: + 2
Amazon Prime Video
It was a light month for Amazon Prime Video, with the biggest original release probably being The Boys Presents: Diabolical. Points: + 1
Apple TV+
Apple TV+ gets new episodes of Severance, the WeWork limited series WeCrash, and the generational drama Pachinko. None of it’s bad, it’s just that there isn’t much of it. Points: + 1
Peacock
Peacock had a fair number of library titles arrive in March, including a fairly robust selection of Alfred Hitchcock movies, but the only big original to speak of was the Tiger King drama Joe vs. Carole. Points: + 1
