Last week, we reported that production had begun on The Witcher season 3. The stars were on location, the inside sources were sharing their whispers, and it looked like everyone was returning to the Continent. Now, Netflix has given the official confirmation: The Witcher season 3 is filming!

The show’s official Twitter account shared the first image from the set, showing Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Charlotra hanging out next to a frozen lake in costume. The caption reads, “Our family is back together again. #TheWitcher Season 3 is officially in production!”

The Witcher season 3 plot synopsis revealed

To go along with the announcement, Netflix also released the official plot synopsis for The Witcher’s third season:

"As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever."

It sounds like things will be perilous, which is pretty much standard on the Continent. Season 2 left off with various parties learning that Ciri was either still alive, had the Elder Blood, or was with Geralt; schemes to use her or murder her were being set into motion. We’ll see plenty of those come to fruition in season 3.

Previously, The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich teased a “huge” season ahead for the series. Given that season 3 will be adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel The Time of Contempt, widely considered one of the strongest novels in The Witcher series, there’s no doubt that’s true. We won’t get into spoilers, but it’s going to be a rough ride for Geralt, Ciri, and Yen.

No release date is currently set for The Witcher season 3. A 2023 release date seems likely, considering how heavy the post-production process is for this special effects-driven show. In the meantime, the Blood Origin prequel series starring Michelle Yeoh will be coming out on Netflix sometime this year.

And let’s not forget that CD Projekt Red has just announced the development of a fourth video game in The Witcher franchise. There’s a lot to look forward to for fans of the White Wolf.
