Game of Thrones star thought Jaime and Cersei’s ending was “romantic”

Game of Thrones ended over two years ago, but the final stretch continues to be debated among fans. Was it a bold ending for a series known for bold choices, or was it a train wreck?
Among the many controversial moments was when Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) decided to leave Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), with whom he’d finally consummated a relationship in Winterfell, to return to King’s Landing to help his megalomaniacal twin sister Cersei, with whom he’d been in a tremendously dysfunctional romance for decades. Ultimately, Jaime and Cersei died in each other’s arms as Daenerys Targaryen attacked the Red Keep, bringing it down around their heads.
The good folks of the Game of Thrones subreddit have found this old interview with Coster-Waldau where he gives his take on the ending. Let’s see if it kicks up any new dust, shall we?

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau thought Jaime and Cersei’s ending was “beautiful, romantic”
“It made complete sense for me,” Coster-Waldau said of the ending for his character. “[Jaime] has always been dedicated to his sister. She was pregnant. She’s on her own. Of course he’s gonna go back and try to help her. It made complete sense to me. That ending, I thought was beautiful, romantic. I was quite sure a lot of people would be very upset that he didn’t stay with…Brienne…but I thought it was beautiful.”
Personally, while I had a lot of problems with Game of Thrones season 8, Jaime and Cersei’s ending wasn’t among them. I think the show could have taken more time teasing out Jaime’s conflict over whether to leave Brienne (“the show could have taken more time” is basically the mantra of season 8), but I have no problem believing it would happen, and I did feel for Jaime and Cersei at their end.
