It’s been a couple of months now since The Mandalorian season 2.5 The Book of Boba Fett wrapped up its run on Disney+ and left us wondering about the fate of Mando and Baby Yoda. Though the pair parted ways at the end of The Mandalorian season 2, Disney clearly knew our hearts couldn’t take their separation for long. The final shot of The Book of Boba Fett shows them blasting off into space in Din Djarin’s new Naboo-era starfighter, which conveniently has a droid compartment that was upgraded to give Baby Yoda his own little co-pilot seat. Yes, we can already tell The Mandalorian is going to be cute when it comes back; how could it not?
As of now, there has been no official announcement about when the show will be returning for its third season, but we may have just gotten our first hint. During a recent guest appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Giancarlo Esposito teased when we might see The Mandalorian season 3. The Breaking Bad star plays villain Moff Gideon; the last season ended with Mando taking the Darksaber from the Gideon and seemingly sending him off to prison with Cara Dune. But of course Esposito is back for season 3.
“You’ll get [The Mandalorian season 3] soon. You’ll get it soon,” Esposito said. “I got a little few things to do in regards to that, to put some finishing touches on what I do, but I believe it will be sometime this summer. No date set yet, but coming soon.”
Esposito also talked a bit about the character of Moff Gideon, who series co-creator Jon Favreau wrote specifically for him. Apparently, Esposito’s one demand was that he had to have a cape. “I have nothing but great things to say about this studio, about this franchise, in regard to how they have enlightened our children to mythology, and to what’s right, and how to go about doing what’s right,” he said.
The Mandalorian season 3 coming “sometime this summer”
Esposito’s comments about the release window being in the summer are interesting for a few reasons. The next Star Wars show on Disney+, Obi-Wan Kenobi, starts airing on May 27 and is expected to last six episodes. The first two episodes are releasing together, which means that the show’s finale will likely drop on June 24. Assuming Disney wants to leave at least a week or two before launching straight into The Mandalorian season 3, that would mean a mid-to-late July or August release.
Until we get official word from Lucasfilm or Disney, we always have to keep our usual ounce of skepticism handy. We’ll be on the lookout for more details.
