I’m just gonna level with you right at the top of the post: I am old and I don’t really get Minecraft. It was a bit after my time, gaming-wise. I know it’s a tremendously popular video game that came out over a decade ago, I know it involves little blocky people running around an environment where they can create more or less anything they want, and I know it remains pretty big to this day. If you need proof of that, just look at the way Warner Bros. is still trying to make a movie out of it despite numerous failed attempts.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest attempt will be mounted by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, after both Peter Sollett and Rob McElhenney dropped out. What’s more, it’ll star Game of Thrones veteran Jason Momoa, Aquaman himself.

Maybe. The Minecraft movie was originally supposed to come out this year, but given that it just now found its star that’s probably not going to happen. We’ll see what becomes of this stab.

What is the Minecraft movie starring Jason Momoa about?

We know nothing about the story. Will Momoa actually play someone from the Minecraft universe, like “Minecraft Steve,” or will this one of those things where he’s real guy who sucked into the game? Or maybe someone from planet Minecraft will visit our world, kind of like what’s happening in the recent Sonic the Hedgehog movies?

Speaking of the Sonic movies, they’ve been a success, as was the Detective Pikachu movie from a couple years back. With Minecraft on their heels, I think we’ve officially gotten to a place where video game movies have become a standard feature of the movie landscape.

Next. Pedro Pascal: Game of Thrones was “one of the best experiences I’ve ever had”. dark
