The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the biggest movie franchise in history, making household names out of figures like Captain America, Iron Man and even the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Then there’s Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which is made up of movies starring Spider-Man villains like Venom and Morbius. There have been ups and downs, but clearly Sony thinks it’s a universe worth expanding, as Variety reports that rapper Bad Bunny will play the villain El Muerto in an upcoming movie.

In Marvel comics, El Muerto comes from a long line of wrestlers. His powers, which include superhuman strength, come from a mask handed down through the generations. Naturally, the movie version of El Muerto — who’s real name is Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez — will be an antihero, just like all the other Sony protagonists.

New Marvel-adjacent movie El Muerto comes out in 2024

“To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible .. so exciting,” Bad Bunny told the crowd at CinemaCon. In addition to his music career, Bad Bunny has dabbled in professional wrestling, so it’s as good a fit as we’re likely to get. He’ll also be the first Latino actor to headline a live-action Marvel movie…although again, the Sony movies aren’t technically part of the MCU proper. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man kind of straddles the line.

El Muerto will be out in theaters on January 12, 2024.

Next. Have any of these 15 shows become “the next Game of Thrones”?. dark
