Lucasfilm reportedly scales back plans for Star Wars: Andor

Among the approximately 300 Star Wars shows that Disney has in development is Andor, a prequel to Star Wars: Rogue One that follows fan favorite character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) on various adventures across the galaxy. We don’t know what those adventures will entail, but given that Cassian Andor is one of the key figures in the mission to steal the Death Star plans, we can assume there’ll be plenty of espionage and sticking it to the Empire.

Andor is slated to be the next live-action Star Wars show on Disney+ after Obi-Wan Kenobi drops this May. Despite the fact that the character has had relatively little screen time, having only appeared in Rogue One, Lucasfilm and Disney are apparently investing quite a bit in the series.

Stellan Skarsgård (DuneThor) is one of the many actors attached to the project, and let it slip last year that he already had filming dates for season 2 in his schedule, per The Direct. So while we haven’t even gotten a trailer or any other information about Andor as yet, Lucasfilm is confident enough in it that they’re already moving forward on a second season.

Star Wars: Andor to get three seasons instead of five?

Now we’re finding out a bit more. The Andor News Twitter account recently translated an interview from TV Cultura in Brazil with Andor’s director of photography Adriano Goldman. In it, Goldman talks about a television series he was contracted for which recently had its planned run scaled back a bit, saying “the series I worked on was supposed to be five seasons long but I think it’s not happening, it will have three maybe.” While he doesn’t name Andor specifically, an examination of Goldman’s credits and upcoming projects has led many fans to believe that he’s referring to the Star Wars show.

Obviously, we always keep our healthy dose of skepticism handy when dealing with anything that isn’t an official announcement, but this is a curious one. If Goldman is referring to Andor, and that show originally had five seasons planned…well, my first question is why? That’s the equivalent of the entire run of The Last Kingdom, but for a Star Wars spinoff about a relatively unknown character. It’s easy to imagine how something like that could have grown cumbersome, so if Lucasfilm and Disney did make the choice to reduce Andor to three seasons, it doesn’t sound like the worst decision in the world.

That said, there’s an awful lot of room for speculation here. Rumors abound that Andor may hit Disney+ sometime in August, so hopefully we get more news in the coming months.

In the meantime, the next Star Wars thing coming to Disney+ is Obi-Wan Kenobi. That limited series will debut its first two episodes on May 27, with new episodes premiering on Wednesdays after that.
