Loki writer talks Kang, confirms the series connects to Doctor Strange 2

After concluding the “Infinity Saga,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now well into exploring the endless possibilities of the multiverse. Of course, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Loki have already dived into multiversal mayhem, but Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will take things to another level. And in true MCU fashion, the events of both those other series will lead into Doctor Strange 2.
Multiverse of Madness will mark the first time that the events of an MCU Disney+ series will be continued on the big screen. We already know that the movie will catch up with Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) after the events of WandaVision. And now, writer Michael Waldron has confirmed that there is a strong Loki connection as well.
While writing Loki, Waldron was also working on the script for Multiverse of Madness. Given his attachment to both projects, a strong connection between them was inevitable. “The headaches I have are probably intertwined,” he told The Playlist. “I mean, it’s all intertwined and it all stands alone.”
"Like a great comic universe, I think that one thing certainly informs the other. You’re going to have a better time watching the next chapter of an MCU story if you’ve seen the stuff before it."
WandaVision and Loki aren’t the only things we’ll see tie into Multiverse of Madness. From the trailers, it looks like we’re in for a multiverse of cameos, with even Patrick Stewart seemingly stepping back into the role of Professor X.
Michael Waldron discusses including Kang in Loki
Loki introduced us to He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), a variant of the Marvel Comics villain Kang the Conqueror. Kang is set to be a pretty baddie in future movies, including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Debuting him on Loki was a good way to end the season and to set up future events.
“He Who Remains is just kind of an old creepy guy in the comics, and I pushed and Marvel was very receptive to it, the idea, this should be a variant of Kang,” Waldron explained. “Because I knew Kang was coming down the pipe as a villain in the MCU and it just felt too delicious to not have him intertwined in our time travel story somehow.”
"And so then it was just … upon us to justify his role in this place, but Marvel was very supportive of all that."
The version of Kang we see in Loki is killed by Sylvie in the finale. But the character repeatedly told her that even if she kills him, he’ll be back. He even gives her a teasing wink as he dies.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness drops in theaters on May 4, 2022. We’ll have to wait a little longer for Loki season 2, which is currently in development.
