Insiders get sneak peaks at Aquaman 2, The Flash, Black Adam and more
By Dan Selcke
CinemaCon, an industry event where studios talk directly to theater chain execs and film industry pros, is going on. Warner Bros. has been showing off a lot of footage for some of their big DC projects…none of which we’ve gotten to see as of yet.
Here’s some of the superhero-themed stuff that industry insiders have gotten to see so far:
- Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director debuted a sizzle reel from the upcoming sequel, with footage showing Black Manta coming to power. In a video message, star Jason Momoa said that “the characters coming in are pretty intense. Nothing else I’ve ever been a part of that’s like this.”
- Attendees got to watch some new footage from Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson’s new movie Black Adam, with Johnson on hand to compare the titular antihero to Clint Eastwood’s corrupt police officer character Dirty Harry. In the footage, Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) admonishes Black Adam that “heroes don’t kill people.” Black Adam, glowering, replies, “Well, I do.” wOw So eDgY!
- On the opposite side of the spectrum, we got some new footage from Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which is far lighter in tone. The insiders watched a brief scene where Shazam (Zachary Levi) is on a date with Wonder Woman, although it’s cut such that we never see her face. Gal Gadot must have been busy.
- Finally, we saw some footage from the upcoming Flash movie starring Ezra Miller. It features Michael Keaton back as Bruce Wayne, giving a more subdued reading of his manic line from 1989’s Batman: “You wanna get nuts? Let’s get nuts.”
But again, we haven’t actually seen any of this…yet. Hopefully it’s coming.
Here’s what The Batman would look like if it starred Adam West
And then there’s DC’s biggest hero: Batman. We’ve already learned that Warner Bros. Discovery will be making a sequel to The Batman again starring Robert Pattinson; the only surprising thing there is how long they took to announce it.
In the meantime, @CorridorDigital has put together this absolutely brilliant edit of what The Batman would look like if Adam West — the star of the campy, ’60s-era Batman show, was in it:
Would watch.
Over on the TV side of things, The CW is prepping a new show called Gotham Knights. Technically it’s not about Batman but rather what happens after Batman is killed and the children of his most famous villains are framed for his murder, but the Caped Crusader will probably show up at some point, and when he does, Supernatural veteran Jensen Ackles wants under the cape and cowl.
“Batman. Let’s be clear about that,” Ackles said at a convention when asked what DC superhero he’d like to play. “I’ve gotten to do the voice, why not get to play the Bat? Maybe someone at Gotham Knights can put in a good word for me if that role ever comes up. I don’t know if it will though, as they’re pretty particular about that.”
So there’s a lot of DC stuff coming out over the next couple of years. May it bring Warner Bros. Discovery good fortune.
