The Walking Dead will air its series finale later this year, marking an end to 11 seasons of zombie-blasting action. But AMC has no intention of letting the franchise go; it’s planning a whole network of spinoffs, including an anthology series called Tales of the Walking Dead, a Maggie-Negan spinoff called Isle of the Dead, and an unnamed show about fan favorite characters Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride).
Well…scratch that last one. Despite setting up some kind of spinoff for the two characters on The Walking Dead proper (they’ve talked about striking out together), TV Line reports that McBride will not be in the show…so it’s just the Daryl show now.
“Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe,” a network spokesperson said in a statement. “Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future.”
Daryl’s Walking Dead spinoff will be set in Europe
Buried in that statement is the nugget that the new spinoff will be “set and filmed in Europe,” something else that the franchise has set up; how is Europe faring during the zombie apocalypse? Not well, I guarantee you.
AMC has been nimble when it comes to The Walking Dead spinoffs throwing it curveballs, I’ll give them that. What do you think? Would you watch a Daryl spinoff without Carol? Would you have watched a Carol-Daryl spinoff in the first place?
