We’ve been reporting an awful lot this week about CinemaCon, where studio executives show off their upcoming projects to cinema owners and other industry folks, and we’re not about to stop. The event is due to wrap up today, but that doesn’t mean the news has stopped.
In its conference, Universal showcased a brand new trailer for Jurassic World: Dominion. But Dominion wasn’t the only movie on display; among numerous other titles Universal played up were the final Halloween film Halloween Ends and the new Jordan Peele horror movie Nope.
Peele took to the stage to talk up the movie and the importance of supporting original films in this age of remakes, reboots, and sequels. Per The Hollywood Reporter, new footage of the film was screened which included a first glimpse at the mysterious threat that will be facing leads James Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) and his sister Jill (Keke Palmer) in the film. Details are sparse, in part because Peele appealed to the reporters present to help keep the mystery alive for viewers who wouldn’t get to see the film until its July 22 release date. “Trailers will give you a taste, but we want to retain some of the mystery, so you can be satisfied going to the damn movie,” he said.
Of course, this is the internet, so if you dig hard enough you can probably find something. For our part, we’ll be honoring Peele’s request.
Jamie Lee Curtis: Halloween Ends will “fuck you up”
After Peele’s presentation, actor Jamie Lee Curtis took to the stage to talk up Halloween Ends, the forthcoming final film in the Halloween franchise. Curtis starred as protagonist Laurie Strode in the first Halloween movie all the way back in 1978, and has reprised the role throughout the series. Per The A.V. Club, the actor reflected on this incredible journey with the character while also delivering some bombshell and expletive-filled commentary on what we can expect in the next movie.
“I had no idea when I was cowering in the closet 45 years ago that this character would become the most important relationship of my entire career in professional life—and I’m grateful,” Curtis said. “Laurie Strode is the O.G. final girl, she’s the one the term apparently was created for—the one that won’t be stopped, will face the monsters when others run. And over the years, that has taken on obviously new dimensions.”
"I see Laurie now as more than just a figure facing a literal boogeyman. I see her standing up for so many women who face their own figurative boogeymen. And just like them, she won’t back down. Horror lets us confront what we can’t control. It allows us to scream and fight and sometimes win in a world that doesn’t always allow those cathartic opportunities."
A trailer was then shown for the movie, which Curtis promised would “fuck you up.”
We’ll take her at her word.
Halloween Ends comes out this fall on October 14.
