The Outlander season 6 finale had everything we could have asked for. After a two-year hiatus, we needed a season centered on Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe), and that is exactly what we got.

Words can’t express how devastated I am that the season is over, but I’m also eager to see what’s next in Season 7. There’s a lot still left up in the air after a very dark, gritty season.

Before we get into the details, here is your SPOILER warningIf you haven’t seen the Outlander season 6 finale, come back here after you’ve seen it.

The cast and crew of Outlander have had a lot to say about the finale episode, “I Am Not Alone,” so let’s dive into it, and what might be next for the Fraser family.

The Outlander Season 6 finale was a whole lot of action

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Heughan and Balfe dished about their first time doing action scenes together. And boy, was it epic.

Following the brutal murder of Malva (Jessica Reynolds), the Committee of Safety fingered Claire as the primary suspect. Very soon, we had a Western-style shootout between the Frasers and the Committee. Jamie and Claire came out guns blazing and I couldn’t get enough of it. Sure, it was traumatizing to see them in this predicament, but I loved how they banded together to take down anyone that threatened their happiness.

According to Heughan, Claire is “pretty good at loading rifles, and also a pretty damn good shot.” He added that Claire and Jamie have always been a unit, they’re good to go in a “them against the world” type of situation. “They’re a good team, and it’s fun to see them now literally fighting people off to protect their home. It’s the first time we’ve done action together.”

For Balfe, it was quite an education. “It’s the first time I’ve ever smoked a gun, unintentionally,” she said. “Note to self: when you fire and there’s a flash in the pan and you’ve got all this smoke going up, don’t inhale at that moment because you literally will smoke the gun.”

That said, some things about the finale were very familiar, like Claire being abducted; that’s happened more times than we want to count. Luckily, by the end of the episode, Jamie and Ian (John Bell) are coming to rescue her.

Unfortunately, the wait could be perilous. “It’s very dangerous times at the moment,” Balfe said. “There’s multiple threats. There’s the threat of the Browns and all of that, but this is a time where law and order is completely breaking down. We don’t know if there’s going to be any form of trial, what that might look like, are people willing to take justice into their own hands. There’s a lot going on, so you better hurry up.”

What to expect from Outlander season 7

The cast and crew are already filming the next season, and they’re keeping mum about the details. Also speaking to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Maril Davis talked about what fans can expect. “This is our biggest season yet,” she said. “We have so many storylines. So many different places. The trajectory — we cover so much terrain. I really feel sorry for our production designer, art department, costume designer and her team. It’s such a huge season. We almost can’t wrap our arms around it. It’s not only the extra four episodes, it’s just, the Revolution is here. It’s going to be really exciting.”

That’s about all we really know, but given how things ended in season 6, I have no doubt that the story is only going to get crazier from here on out. We haven’t even touched on the identity of that mystery time traveler.

No word on Outlander season 8 yet

Hopefully the wait for season 7 won’t be too long. In the meantime, Davis mentioned the Outlander prequel series about Jaime’s parents as well as season 8. “I don’t have any news about the prequel series except for we’re developing that which is exciting,” she told Digital Spy. “I haven’t heard anything about season eight. I would love to do it, but those decisions we are waiting to hear about. I would love to finish out the books if possible, but we will see what happens!”

Here’s hoping we get more information on both of these fronts soon!
