Sandra Oh had a different (more depressing) ending in mind for Killing Eve

Killing Eve ended after four seasons last month, and it’s safe to say the ending was not well-liked by most fans. For a show that started off with so much critical acclaim, it was unfortunate to see it end on a disastrous note.

But before I get into the nitty-gritty details of the Killing Eve series finale, if you have not watched it, come back here after you have, since I wouldn’t want to ruin anything for you.

Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about that series finale that relied on the “Bury Your Gays” trope. It was a very strange way to conclude things after four seasons of Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) chasing each other. Honestly, most of us (including the author of the Killing Eve books, Luke Jennings) thought Eve and Villanelle might get a happily ever after. Instead, Villanelle died, and things just…ended.

It was not the ending most of us wanted, and now Sandra Oh is finally speaking out about it.

How Sandra Oh would have ended Killing Eve

Speaking with Deadline, Oh shared how she thought things should have ended…and it’s depressing. “You should kill my character,” Oh had told showrunner Laura Neal. “I thought that would be the strongest and the most interesting [ending].”

Um, I’m not sure I agree.

“Eve was starting to get into, like, a nihilistic place,” Oh explained. “And we’re like, ‘Let’s just continue that line and go straight into it.’ They came to me, and they said, ‘We can’t do it. We need to change it…Eve needs to live.’”

I think a happier ending would have been better after four seasons of turmoil and angst. Couldn’t we just let them ride off into the sunset together as a happy couple? Sure, they’re not conventional, but it would have been better than Eve dying. I love Sandra Oh, but I don’t like the idea of Eve dying either.

They deserved a better ending, and while there may be a lot of rationales for why either one of them needed to die, I think that the series did this story a disservice. Sigh, we all deserved better!
