The Johnny Depp-Amber Heard court trial, which kicked off about a month ago, has been the biggest grisly entertainment spectacle since Game of Thrones. Millions have watched as these two celebrities have had every sordid detail of their marriage — which ended in 2016 after Heard filed for divorce and obtained a domestic violence restraining order against Depp — dragged into the open.
But things are on pause this week. That’s because Judge Penney S. Azcarate has a previously scheduled conference to attend. Proceedings will resume on Monday, May 16. Both Court TV and Law & Crime are live-streaming the trial.
This lawsuit, by the way, was filed by Depp against Heard; he alleges that she defamed him when she wrote a 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post describing her experiences with domestic violence; she didn’t mention him by name. Essentially, he’s accusing her of ruining his career by lying about what happened during the relationship. He wants $50 million. Heard countersued for $100 million, claiming that Depp ruined her career by painting her as liar.
No Johnny Depp and Amber Heard case results yet
When last we left our cast of characters, Depp’s team was done putting forward his case and Amber Heard had taken the stand. When we pick back up, Depp’s lawyers will cross-examine her.
That’s quite the cliffhanger to leave things on. And arguments for a while yet. The trail is set to conclude on May 27.
How will the whole thing end? Will Depp get everything he asked for, or will Heard? Will it be somewhere in the middle? Might the jury conclude that the two were in a toxic, mutually abusive relationship and send them both home with nothing? Anything could happen.
