As Amazon prepares to launch its huge Lord of the Rings TV series, other companies marshal their forces to blast us with the brand.

Amazon is preparing to launch its new, fabulously expensive Lord of the Rings show, The Rings of Power, in September. Right on cue, we’re seeing a lot of other Lord of the Rings projects emerge as everyone rushes to get in on the feeding frenzy. A new animated Lord of the Rings movie, The War of the Rohirrim, is due out in 2024 from New Line Cinema, the same studio that made Peter Jackson’s trilogy. And now, Variety reports that the video game industry is getting in on the fun.

Electronic Arts, the company behind the FIFA games, the Battlefield games and lots of scandals involving employee mistreatment and predatory micro-transactions, will make The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth. The mobile game will feature a “wide roster” of characters from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. For this RPG game, EA promises “high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animations and stylized art” as well as “immersive storytelling, turn-based combat and deep collection systems.”

Heroes of Middle-earth is the latest result of a push by Lord of the Rings rights-holders to shore up interest in all things Middle-earth. “We are incredibly excited to partner with the Saul Zaentz Company and Middle-earth Enterprises on the next generation of mobile role-playing games,” said EA exec Malachi Boyle. “The team is filled with fans of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ and each day they bring their tremendous passion and talents together to deliver an authentic experience for players.

Middle-earth Enterprises chief brand and licensing officer Fredrica Drotos weighed in as well: “We are thrilled to be working with EA once again, this time to bring a mobile game solely inspired by Middle-earth as described in the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien to its fans. It’s an honor to work with the talented Capital Games team whose knowledge and love of the lore is palpable throughout.”

There’s no word on when Heroes of Middle-earth might be out, but you imagine EA wants it out near in time to Amazon’s series.
