Outlander season 7 is officially in production. For a fan of the series, more beautiful words have never been spoken. After the last Droughtlander, which lasted for nearly two years, it’s very exciting to learn that the cast and crew are back at work.

This bodes well for Outlander fans because it means that the hiatus shouldn’t last longer than a year. The wait is still unbearable, but it’s better than what came before. Given how season 6 came to an end, there are so many unanswered questions that we need updates on. Is Claire (Caitriona Balfe) going to be okay? Will Jamie (Sam Heughan) make it to her in time? Who is the mysterious time traveler? Did Roger (Richard Rankin) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) learn about what happened with Claire and Jamie? We need to know everything as soon as possible, please.

And when season 7 does return, it’ll be for an expanded 16 episodes rather than the mere eight we got in season 6, so things are looking up all around.

Outlander season 7 is underway

Outlander executive producer Maril Davis spoke exclusively with Digital Spy about production ramping up again, and when fans can expect to see new episodes. “I actually don’t know!” Davis said about the premiere date. “I haven’t been told when we will be airing season seven, all I know is we are in the beginning of shooting it now, and that’s all I can say. I think we are on a fairly typical schedule but it is a supersized season.”

The sixth season was so short in part because the show was dealing with complications created by the COVID-19 pandemic. This wasn’t ideal for fans, but they did the best they could with what they had and still delivered one heck of a jam-packed season.

There’s also a forthcoming Outlander prequel series focused on Jamie’s parents. Davis didn’t have much to say on that front, either, but she did mention that they are working on it…and that she’s hoping for an Outlander season 8 but hasn’t heard anything yet.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, STARZ announced that the role of William Ransom has been cast. Charles Vandervaart will be stepping in as William, Jamie’s adult son. Jamie slept with Geneva Dunsany during his parole days; she became pregnant but passed away in childbirth. William was raised by the only man Jamie ever trusted: Lord John Grey (David Berry).

For all these years, John has been raising William as his own, but some truths could come to light in season 7. William, who is every inch the Englishman, will be making his way to the American colonies to fight in the Revolutionary Way, and I’m willing to bet that he will cross paths with his biological father. I don’t think it’ll be pretty, especially when he finds out the full truth.

Ah, Outlander season 7 can’t get here soon enough!
