The Wheel of Time is one of Amazon Prime Video’s big swings for the fences. Based on the 14-book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time takes place in a richly imagined fantasy world where five young men and women are spirited away from their sleepy village by the Aes Sedai sorceress Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) on a world-spanning adventure to stop the return of the Dark One. Season 1 received mixed reviews from the fanbase, but it resonated with enough viewers that Amazon was eager to get to work on season 2.

The first season left off with a few big cliffhangers, such as Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) discovering he’s the prophesied Dragon Reborn and setting off on his own after asking Moiraine to tell his friends that he died in the season’s climactic confrontation at the Eye of the World. Moiraine, on the other hand, was shielded from the One Power in a marked deviation from the novels. It’s not clear if this is a temporary shield or if she was permanently “stilled,” and we won’t find out until season 2.

Thankfully, we’ve just gotten some very encouraging news about the status of season 2.

Latest updates about The Wheel of Time season 2 release date

The Wheel of Time season 2 has been a pretty epic production. It started filming all the way back in July of 2021, months before season 1 was even out. It has wrapped shooting as of the first week of May. We’re still likely a little ways off from getting a solid release date, though. The show is certain to have a lengthy post-production process due to all the sets, costumes, locations and special effects involved; that Channeling takes time to make look so good!

Fortunately, we got a bevy of updates about The Wheel of Time at JordanCon, a fan convention honoring the series and its creator Robert Jordan. Via a virtual Q&A at the event, we learned that Ayoola Smart will play Aviendha in the show. We also got teases that season 2 will explore the Aes Sedai Liandrin’s “darker side,” delve deeper into Alanna’s polyamorous relationship with her warders, and even make a potentially major change to the battle at Falme, which is the climax of book 2 and will feature in the upcoming season. It’s a lot!

As for the release window, the best info we have is that The Wheel of Time season 2 will premiere after Amazon’s other big fantasy show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, comes out this September. That means the earliest we might see The Wheel of Time season 2 is in November or December 2022. An early 2023 release is also a strong possibility.

Fortunately, The Wheel of Time season 1 is available to stream in its entirety on Prime Video, should you need to scratch that itch for Randland.
