The Boys stars tease season 3’s big musical sequence!
By Dan Selcke
The Boys is known for many things: impaling whales, getting choked by mile-long members, generally being gross and pushing back against the Marvel-dominated era of sanitized superheroes we are currently living in. But even a show as edgy as The Boys can get wholesome once in a while, and it looks like season 3 will be one of those times; based on the trailer, we’re getting a musical sequence!
The sequence will involve Frenchie (Tomer Capone) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), who officially got together at the end of season 2. She’s an unwilling Supe who devoted herself to revenge against the people who made her a freak and he’s a jack of all trades dedicated to taking down the Seven, but they managed to find a sense of normalcy with each other. Season 3 will catch up with them around a year after the end of season 2, when life is pretty good.
“[Kimiko] is finally able to go out and discover what her likes, dislikes, hobbies are,” Fukuhara told Entertainment Weekly. “Who is she at the core as a normal girl? You’ll see in season 3 what she chose to do in the past year or so, getting a taste test of what life is like to be normal. It’s fantastic for her. She doesn’t have to just be about killing and violence.”
And that, somehow, involves a musical sequence. “I was standing in the middle of the set as, essentially, the lead character,” Fukuhara remembered. “I never thought my dream would come to life.”
Fukuhara is no stranger to stunts — her character had her share of fancy footwork over the first two seasons — but dancing is something different. “I am not used to it,” she said. “If you don’t know the basic moves, you can’t do the choreography. It’s so difficult.”
But with persistence and help from choreography Amy Wright, they got there. “Dancing With the Stars ain’t got s— on us,” Capone added.
If you’re wondering, The Boys season 3 isn’t going to be all sunshine and rainbows. As the trailer above shows, there’s still plenty of grim, including for Frenchie. “We find Serge feeling he has legitimacy. That’s all under the surface,” Capone said. “Quickly, he has to deal with his inner demons about what role he plays in the Boys group and what or who for. When things get out of hand, the answers will confront him from all sides that will take him for a steep ‘rollercoaster’ ride.”
The Boys college spinoff starts up
Meanwhile, the world of The Boys is growing. EW reports that production is starting up on a spinoff series about a group of Supes in college. “It’s been a long, winding process but I hope people like it as much as I like it,” said The Boys showrunner Erik Kripke. “It’s a really smart, funny, insane show. It’s totally different than The Boys, but it’s completely within that world and tone.”
The spinoff, which doesn’t yet have a title, stars Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann and Shelley Conn. Those last four actors are new cast members, with Thor replacing Reina Hardesty after she departed the project.
There’s no release date for The Boys college spinoff yet, but The Boys season 3 premieres on June 3; Amazon is dropping the first three episodes all at once.
