It’s almost time to say farewell to Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill, who will be leaving Doctor Who later this year after a special feature-length episode. It’s always tough when it comes time to say goodbye to a Doctor and their companion(s), but we haven’t quite seen the last of the Thirteenth Doctor (Whittaker) and Yaz (Gill) yet.

But soon enough, Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will take over for Whittaker as the Fourteenth Doctor! Fans and cast members alike are super pumped about the next generation of Doctor Who, in part because former showrunner Russell T Davies has returned to once again steer the ship.

I think we can all rest assured that things are going to be just fine as Whittaker transitions out and Gatwa comes in. I’m looking forward to what Gatwa has to offer; with each new Doctor comes a new set of adventures.

Mandip Gill shares her excitement about the new Doctor

While speaking with Digital Spy, Gill shared her enthusiasm over Gatwa’s casting. “It’s so exciting!” she said.

Pretty much no one had Gatwa on their radar before the announcement, but Gill thinks he’s “the perfect person” to take over. “He also seems really excited about doing it and I’ve always found when people come into the show, those that are fans of the show or are so excited to be there and want to hold the sonic [screwdriver] up, it’s always just really refreshing and it’s exactly what that show needs.”

I agree with her wholeheartedly! There is nothing like when a new actor is beyond excited to become the next Doctor. I think as a Whovian you can feel that energy and excitement, and it makes you feel reassured that the show is in good hands. I’m getting great vibes from Gatwa.

While a premiere date has not yet been announced, Whittaker and Gill’s final episode of Doctor Who will air later this fall on BBC One in the U.K. and on BBC America in the U.S. And if you’re hoping to catch up on previous seasons, you can do so by heading to HBO Max where seasons 1-12 are all available for streaming.
